  • TIDY NI Supporting Rethink Waste
    TIDY Northern Ireland supports the new Rethink Waste campaign to raise awareness and understanding of waste prevention and recycling issues. The aim is to give people tangible, practical tips for action in support of being responsible and playing their aprt in cuttin g down the amount of waste we produce. The campaign is running advertisements on TV, radio, newspapers, buses and billboards. A waste calculator is available at www.rethinkwasteni.org. The caluclator challenges users attitudes to waste prevention, reducing, reusing and recycling in a relaxed and fun way through answering ten questions focused on key waste streams. The calculator adn other elements are also available on the Rethink Waste Facebook page

  • 2010 Litter Summit draws people from across Northern Ireland and beyond
    Representatives from councils and businesses across Northern Ireland, and speakers from as far as the USA gathered in Craigavon Civic Centre on Thursday 11th November 2010 to attend the second Northern Ireland Litter Summit organised by TIDY Northern Ireland. Delegates were able to discuss how to tackle our environmental crime crisis with some of the most experienced specialists from Texas, England and here in Northern Ireland.

2011 Coca-Cola Coast Care Award Winners

The Coca-Cola Coast Care Group Award

This award recognises the excellent work of a group who throughout the year have worked with their local beach operator and key stakeholders on their stretch of coastline. The Glenariff Improvement group are a group of volunteers that have adopted a hands on approach when caring for their local environment through litter lifts, the maintenance of lifebelts along the shoreline and tackling the issue of vandalism in the village amongst many other conservation activities working closely with Moyle District Council.

Coca-Cola River Care Group Award

This award recognises the excellent work that a group who throughout the year have given their leisure time to maintain and care for their local river. Members of Kesh Angling Club organise litter picks on a regular basis, the distance usually covered by Kesh Angling club is over 2 miles and the club regularly use their own boats to pick litter from those places not accessible from the banks of the river.

Coca-Cola Lough Care Group Award

This Award recognises the hard work and dedication from a group who throughout the year have given their time to look after and care for their local lough. The Ballysaggart Environmental group look after the locally known Black Lough which is recognised as one of the most important wetland areas in Dungannon District. The groups mission is to engage the community and local council, stimulate interest and debate and ensure that this habitat is developed in a sustainable manner, the group lobbies local council and councillors, submit environmental articles to the local newspapers, organise an annual environmental fun day as well as engaging with the local community and schools through clean ups and biodiversity talks.

Newcomer Group of the Year

Best Newcomer of the Year Award

This award recognises the hard work and dedication of a now group established within the past year who have showed a dedication and passion for environmental activities on our local coastline and inland water way. The Portstewart Young Vision and the Bushmills Young People's Group was Established in July 2011 by the young people to learn about the marine environment and the impact litter has on wildlife and waterborne activities. This group from the north coast has carried out a number of clean ups as well as undertaking a number of environmental activities through Coleraine Borough Council.

Youth Group of the Year Award

This award recognises the valuable contribution of young people to preserving our environment. Millisle Youth Forum was established in 2009 and since then the management and leadership team have worked with the young people of Millisle to support them in making their contribution to improving the overall environment of the village, to date the group has been involved in a number of environmental projects such as the Millisle Community Garden project, various forms of recycling, community fun days, beachercise classes and beach cleans.

Best Business Involvement Award

This award recognises the work that a local business has carried out in an attempt to better their local coastal environment. SurfSUPNI was established in 2011 by local Portballintrae man John Bustard, who has always had a great appreciation for water sports as well as the environment. His recent business venture has not only provided the area with a new tourist attraction but through his combination of a free stand up paddle board lesson if you can commit to spend 2 hours cleaning a stretch of beach on that same day ensures that the kids and adults can enjoy a fun activity in a clean environment.

Most Committed Volunteer Award

This award recognises an individual who has demonstrated their on-going commitment to protecting Northern Ireland's coast through their consistent hard work delivering clean ups or other activities. Donna Rainey is an outstanding and highly committed anti-litter campaigner who has worked tirelessly in the Coleraine and Ballymoney borough council and North Coast area for many years. With a busy home and working life Donna still manages to be a powerhouse of enthusiasm when it comes to cleaning-up litter and lobbying local people, groups, businesses, statutory bodies and council.
