This was a combined advertising, PR and media campaign targeted directly at smokers who dispose of their cigarette ends incorrectly. The main campaign message did not cast aspersions on smoking as a habit or health risk, but encouraged smokers to take greater responsibility for their smoking litter. In identified campaign areas, TIDY Northern Ireland provided pocket ash trays for smokers whose disposal need is immediate and there are no bins nearby.
The provision of adequate and appropriately designed disposal facilities for cigarette litter was a key element of the campaign, so forging effective partnerships. As part of the campaign, Tidy Northern Ireland worked with 3 partner local authorities to deliver a more high profile and concentrated campaign at a local level, that assisted in the evaluation of the campaign and helped demonstrate to other councils not participating, the results that can be achieved.
The key message of the campaign was to encourage people to correctly dispose of their cigarette once they had finished with it. Posters were installed in places, which agreed to distribute the pocket ashtrays provided by TIDY Northern Ireland. Over the course of the campaign over 20,000 pocket ashtrays were distributed and in some areas smoking related litter decreased by over 70%.
TIDY Northern Ireland has negotiated with a number of bin suppliers discounted rates for companies wanting to purchase cigarette bins for outside their premises, plus see the file below.
