THE PROGRAMME

The Clean Coast Programme brings people together to care for their local coastal environment.

Programme Collage

The groups adopt and manage a stretch of coastline of their choice and towards the following rural beach qualities:

  • Water quality
  • Safety
  • Management
  • Cleanliness
  • Information for the public

The programme aims to enhance the value of the coastline by reducing the impact of litter and other environmental damage thus restoring the aesthetic appeal and increase the amenity and economic value to the community and visitors. The objectives are as follows:

  • To carry out practical cleanups
  • To establish, support and promote voluntary community action groups
  • To raise awareness of the issues resulting from legal disposal of waste and other issues affecting the marine environment along the coastline by educating and involving local people

All sections of the community are encouraged to join and form a programme group for their local stretch of coastline e.g. schools, businesses and individuals. Each programme group can organize and devise their own aims, objectives and activities to clean up and protect their adopted stretch of coastline with the support of the TIDY Northern Ireland Coastal Officer.
