The TIDY Northern Ireland coastal programmes package includes:
The Blue Flag Award is the definitive international beach award recognised in 41 countries, owned and run by the independent non-profit organisation Foundation for Environmental Education. The programme is designed to raise environmental awareness and increase good environmental practise amongst tourists, local communities and beach and marina operators. In 2011 there are seven Blue Flag beaches, one Blue Flag marina and seven Blue Flags boat owners in Northern Ireland. The Blue Flag programme is kindly sponsored by the Northern Ireland Tourist Board. For more information about the Blue Flag Programme please click here .
The Seaside Award is awarded to beaches which meet mandatory bathing water quality standards according to the EC Bathing Water Directive and are also clean, well managed and safe. In 2011 there are ten beaches in Northern Ireland with a Seaside Award. The Seaside award is divided into two award categories which are Resort and Rural.
The Green Coast Award is aimed particularly (but not solely) at rural beaches which do not qualify for other awards due to the lack of intensive management and high level of infrastructure around the beach area, but meet excellent bathing water quality standards according to the EC Bathing Water Directive and are well managed under a scheme of guardianship. In 2011 there are four beaches in Northern Ireland with the Green Coast Award.
